Music and Nature
International Conference in Reykjavík, May, 18th – May, 21st 2011
Call for Papers
Nature has been moved to the forefront of international dialogue – due to the debate about global warming, a dramatic increase of natural disasters and an increased awareness of the interaction between capitalism and natural resources. Also Nature has shifted in the last decade from being merely a topic or “other” of culture to being an essential asset. Iceland symbolizes not only “nature” in many contexts but has an extremely varied musical culture to offer in which nature is often a key topic.
In sync with Icelandic culture the conference will be interactive and democratic. The goals of the conference are:
•to enter the global discourse on global warming and climate change
•to encourage new ideas/fields for further research on Icelandic music
•to support transcultural and intercultural discourse between Iceland and other countries
The conference will be part of a music festival and is a cooperation between the Íslensk tónverkamiðstöð (Iceland Music Information Centre), the Iceland Academy of Music, the Iceland Music Museum and the University of Music and Dance Cologne, Germany. The MIC (Music Information Centre) is prepared to provide material and to give expert advice.
Presentations may represent the most advanced and newest formats, including individual or team papers of twenty minutes in length, commented recitals, workshops involving group participation and discussions. All the presentations are obliged to include Icelandic music or Icelandic composers and to interact with at least one other scholar and/or field of research.
We are looking for 12 referees for this conference. Funds for travel expenses will have to be covered individually unless our pending applications for funding are being granted.
Possible topics may include:
•Nature in Contemporary Music
•”Subduing Nature“ – through music?
•Theory, Nature and History
•Economics, Capitalism and Exploitation
•Patriarchy, gender politics and music
•Nature Myths
•Global warming and Music Making
•Against or with Nature?
Proposals should be within the range of 400 words and describe also its format of presentation (deadline: Nov. 1st, 2010).
